National BC Dal president Dundra Kumaraswamy has urged that efforts be made to secure the Governor’s assent to the Bill providing 42 per cent reservations for Backward Classes in local bodies.

On Wednesday, a delegation of BC organisations led by Mr. Kumaraswamy called on Dr. K. Laxman, national OBC Morcha president and Rajya Sabha member, at his residence and submitted a representation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that pressure must be brought on the Governor to accord approval. “The assent to the BC reservations Bill is imperative,” he observed.

He recalled that the BJP had already extended support to the Bill in the Assembly and asserted, “It is the BJP’s responsibility to provide constitutional safeguard for the measure.”

Expressing concern, Mr. Kumaraswamy said that for decades, BC communities had been subjected to suppression and remained backward due to lack of adequate representation. Only with the assent to the Bill would social justice be ensured for BCs, he underlined.
