Delay in Local Body Elections – Who is Behind the Conspiracy? BJP’s Political Game Exposed
By Dundra Kumara Swamy, National President, BC Dal
In Telangana today, the most pressing question troubling the backward classes (BCs) is this: When will the BC Reservation Bill finally get Presidential assent? The State Legislative Assembly has already taken a bold and historic decision to enhance reservations for BCs in local bodies from 23% to 42%. Yet, the Bill remains stalled at the Governor’s desk, and later at the Union Government level.
This prolonged delay is fuelling doubts across the State. Is there a deliberate conspiracy by the BJP to obstruct justice for BC communities? Are the backward classes being denied their rightful share in governance because of political bias? These are not just questions of law and procedure, but of social justice and equality.
Congress Government’s Commitment
Fulfilling the promises made in the Kamareddy Declaration, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has already demonstrated the Congress government’s sincerity by completing a caste census, setting up a dedicated BC Commission, and introducing legislation in the Assembly. The Bills were passed unanimously and forwarded to the Governor, who in turn sent them to the Union Home Ministry.
Yet, the process has come to a standstill. Why is the BJP-led Centre dragging its feet? When the Supreme Court itself has directed that Governors and the President must decide on State Bills within three months, why are BC-related legislations languishing for months together?
Grave Consequences for Upcoming Elections
With local body elections nearing, the uncertainty is creating unrest. If the Bills are not cleared in time, elections will be forced to proceed under the old quota structure. This would not only undermine the Assembly’s decision but also betray the aspirations of BCs who have fought for decades for their rightful representation.
In fact, there is even a danger that elections may be delayed, causing further constitutional and political complications. BC communities will never forgive another betrayal, having already suffered setbacks in the past when their share was diluted from 34% to 23%.
Fight for Social Justice Will Continue
Dundra Kumara Swamy, firmly declare: this struggle will not stop. From the streets of Telangana to the corridors of Delhi, BC organisations, social groups, and political allies will continue to exert pressure until the 42% quota is implemented. recent massive protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi is only the beginning. Until the Centre honours the Bill, we will not rest.
It is deeply regrettable that some leaders are attempting to communalise this issue by branding the BC Reservation Bill as a “Muslim quota Bill.” Such baseless propaganda seeks only to divide people and weaken the genuine movement for social justice.
BJP’s Accountability
The BJP owes answers to the BCs of this country. Why are the Bills pending for months together at Rashtrapati Bhavan? Why are ordinances sent by the Telangana government also stuck? Is this not proof of the Union government’s indifference and hostility towards BC communities?
As I have repeatedly said, a country that counts cattle must also count its backward classes. If the BJP claims to care about the welfare of the poor and marginalised, let it first prove its sincerity by immediately approving the pending Bills.
A Call for Justice
This is not merely an electoral promise – it is a constitutional, legal, and moral demand. BCs make up the backbone of this State and this nation. Denying them their due share is nothing short of injustice. The time has come for the Union government to shed its prejudices, respect the will of the Telangana Assembly, and give assent to the Bills without delay.
Until then, the movement for 42% BC reservations will continue – from the gallis of Telangana to the streets of Delhi.
