‘42% BC Quota a Landmark Step’: Dundra Kumaraswamy

National BC Dal President hails Congress government’s move ahead of local body polls

Hderabad:
National BC Dal President Dundra Kumaraswamy has lauded the Congress government’s decision to provide 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the forthcoming local body elections, describing it as a “landmark step” in the pursuit of social justice in Telangana.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the move reflected the government’s commitment to empowering backward communities and ensuring their due share in governance. “By enhancing BC reservations, the Congress has given voice to long-standing aspirations. This decision will strengthen grassroots democracy and bring genuine representation to village, mandal, and district-level bodies,” he observed.

The Assembly had earlier passed an amendment to Section 285(A) of the 2018 Panchayat Raj Act to enable the quota enhancement. While the Bill is pending with the Governor, the government is preparing to issue special orders to ensure implementation in view of the High Court’s directive to complete elections by September 30.

Mr. Kumaraswamy urged the Governor to accord immediate assent to the Bill, but welcomed the government’s preparedness to proceed through special orders if necessary. He said the decision, based on the caste survey conducted in the State, would ensure a fair distribution of reservations reflecting the actual population strength of backward communities.

Calling the measure “historic,” he said it was an affirmation of the Congress government’s commitment to the uplift of marginalized sections. “This step will stand as a milestone in Telangana’s social and political history,” he added.
