The Telangana Assembly's approval of 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) has been hailed as a historic move towards social justice and empowerment, according to National BC Dal president Dundra Kumaraswamy.
Assembly Endorses 42% BC Reservations
On Sunday, the Telangana Assembly passed a bill establishing 42% reservations for BCs. Dundra Kumaraswamy, president of the National BC Dal, praised this measure at a felicitation meeting for OBC communities held at a hotel in Kachiguda. He emphasized that the decision marks a crucial turning point in the state's social and political history.
Legislative Changes for Equitable Representation
Kumaraswamy highlighted that the government introduced amendment bills to lift the 50% cap previously present in the Panchayati Raj Act, 2018, and Municipal Act, 2019, enabling increased representation of BCs in local bodies. The Assembly unanimously backed these amendments following extensive discussions among all parties, paving the way for the effective implementation of the 42% reservation policy.
Symbol of Social Justice
Labeling the legalization of 42% reservations as a symbol of social justice, Kumaraswamy criticized former governments for reducing BC reservations from 34% to 23%, a move attributed to previous BRS administrations. He commended the current Congress government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for its commitment to justice for BCs and noted that the ongoing caste survey demonstrates the government’s integrity in social policy.
Call for National Approval
Kumaraswamy demanded that the BJP ensure swift Presidential approval for pending bills on BC reservations if it is genuinely committed to the issue.
Congress Policy Promoting Marginalized Communities
He reiterated that the Congress government is working to fulfill Rahul Gandhi’s promise to increase protections for marginalized groups, contrasting this with the BJP’s alleged opposition to BC interests.
Kumaraswamy warned that BC communities would not remain silent and would continue advocating for their rights.
Foundation for Comprehensive Development
Kumaraswamy concluded by stating that legally guaranteeing 42% reservations for BCs sets a foundation for broad-based development and social justice for Telangana's weaker sections, marking a milestone in the state’s history.
