High Court Stay on BC Reservations — Dundra Kumar Swamy Expresses Deep Concern
The Telangana High Court has issued an interim stay on Government Order (G.O.) No. 9, which provided 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections. The court granted four weeks’ time to the state government to file its counter, and two weeks thereafter for the petitioners to respond.
Reacting strongly to the development, Dundra Kumar Swamy, National President of the BC Dal, expressed deep anguish, terming the order a “historic setback” for the BC community.
This is a major blow to the collective aspirations of the Backward Classes. The Congress government had issued G.O. 9 based on the socio-caste enumeration data, ensuring 42% representation to BCs in local bodies. However, certain vested political and economic interests appear to have conspired to obstruct this move,” he alleged.
Mr.Dundra kumara Swamy emphasized that the stay was only temporary and vowed to continue the fight legally and politically.
Though the High Court has issued an interim stay, it is only a temporary hurdle. We are prepared to take this battle up to the Supreme Court if necessary. As Dr. B.R. Ambedkar said, our vote is our weapon — we will respond democratically to such conspiracies. Along with the legal battle, a public movement will also be launched. With BC unity, we will reclaim our due share in reservations,” he stated.
The Telangana government, through the State Election Commission, had issued a notification on October 9 to conduct elections for Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs), Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) and Sarpanch posts based on the revised reservation pattern providing 42% quota to BCs. The nomination process had already begun when the court issued its stay.
The High Court’s intervention has caused widespread disappointment among BC organisations and activists across the state.
“This is only a temporary obstruction in the pursuit of social justice. The BC community must remain united and determined to regain its rightful share,” Mr. Swamy urged.
