Complaint to Human Rights Commission over Food Poisoning at BC Gurukul in Manuguru

Action sought against officials responsible: Dundra Kumara Swamy

Dundra Kumara Swamy, National President of the National BC Dal and an advocate, has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission regarding the recent food poisoning incident reported at the BC Gurukul Girls’ Hostel in Manuguru town of Bhadradri Kothagudem district.
According to him, around 15 girl students fell ill after consuming food served at the hostel and were rushed to a nearby government hospital with symptoms such as severe stomach pain and vomiting. He termed the incident “deeply disturbing” and said it raised serious concerns about the safety, health and well-being of students residing in government-run residential educational institutions.

Kumara Swamy alleged that the episode reflects negligence on the part of the concerned authorities in ensuring food safety and proper monitoring of hostel facilities. He noted that providing safe and nutritious food to students in government-run Gurukul institutions is a fundamental responsibility of the administration.

He further stated that the incident appears to constitute a violation of the students’ Right to Life and Right to Health, which are guaranteed under the Constitution of India. “The health and safety of students cannot be compromised under any circumstances, especially in institutions meant for the welfare and empowerment of children from socially and economically weaker sections,” he said.
In his complaint to the Human Rights Commission, Kumara Swamy has urged the authorities to order an independent and comprehensive inquiry into the incident and take strict action against the officials responsible, including suspension where necessary.

He also called for the constitution of a special monitoring committee to conduct inspections across Gurukul hostels in the State to ensure food quality, hygiene standards and health safety measures, so that such incidents are not repeated in the future.

Emphasising the seriousness of the matter, Kumara Swamy appealed to the Human Rights Commission to treat the issue with urgency and ensure justice for the affected students while strengthening safeguards to protect the rights and well-being of children studying in residential institutions.
